Gua Sha: A Natural Alternative for Healthy Youthful Skin

Updated: Mar 8, 2021

I bet your thinking right now, what the heck is a Gua Sha? This little magic tool will soon become your best friend. It's a quick and easy habit to add to your daily skincare regime. And the best part? It's completely natural.

In today's society the media is constantly throwing new beauty products at us with false promises. They make us think that we have to spend tons of money in order to achieve this youthful appearance. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge advocate when it comes to a proper skincare routine, but I also like to get down to the root cause of these issues, instead of just putting a temporary band-aide on it. This is why I love using the Gua Sha because it helps stimulate blood flow and allows our body to fix these problems naturally. Now am I saying ditch all your botox or skincare routines? No. I am just simply saying, add this into your routine, to see if you can use a natural alternative first.

What does the Gua Sha do? Gua Sha (pronounced as "Gwa Sha") is a sought after facial treatment that helps to tone, tighten and detox our skin. This technique has been around for millennia. A more extensive version of Gua Sha was used in traditional Chinese medicine to help eliminate fever or cold symptoms. The more modern version (being much more gentle) has similar benefits in it's ability to help cleanse and tone the skin.

The whole purpose of Gua Sha is to tone the face, while move stagnant energy. We do this by massaging our skin with the Gua Sha in repetitive strokes. This movement improves blood circulation to the skin as well as stimulates the lymphatic drainage of the face. Ever notice your face is more puffy in the morning? If this sounds like you, try adding a quick Gua Sha routine to your regime, it could be a life-saver!

What are the benefits of Gua Sha? There are so many benefits to incorporating Gua Sha into your beauty regime. One of the most common being the reduction of inflammation this can be used to reduce water retention in the face, but it's also used to help chronic pain such as arthritis and migraines (crazy, right). To top it all off Gua Sha is detoxifying, relieves tension and gives you glowing skin. I mean, who wouldn't want to give this a go.

Gua Sha routine for beginners: Here is a simple Gua Sha routine that I personally use often. It helps prevent breakouts, while detoxifying and replenishing the skin. I love to do this routine both morning and night. It is particularly energizing to do it in the morning and it literally takes five minutes. If you want a more in-depth Gua Sha then feel free to apply more strokes. Do what feels good to you, if this begins to feel like a chore, take a break from it. Check out the routine below.

  1. Start by applying your favourite serum or moisturizer to a cleansed face, then follow the following steps.
